Early July 2021

July l0th. Around were 2 Avocet and 45 Redshank. On Jackson's Marsh were 24 Black-tailed Godwit and a Spoonbill; on Croftmarsh 14 Avocet and 2 Black-tailed Godwit; on Fenland Lagoon 2 Avocet; and on Tennyson's Sands 62 Avocet and 12 Spoonbill. Going south were 5 Swift, 18 Black-tailed Godwit and 5 Swallow.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 17 new birds: 2 Chiffchaff, a Wren, a Blackcap, 2 Linnet, 8 Whitethroat, a Great Tit, a Robin and a Dunnock; and 7 retraps: 2 Great Tit, 4 Whitethroat and a Lesser Whitethroat.

July 9th. On Tennyson's Sands were 19 Avocet, 14 Black-tailed Godwit and 11 Spoonbill (including 1 in from north); and on Fenland Lagoon 5 Avocet, 2 Greenshank and a Spotted Redshank.

 The seventh session of CES was done this morning. The 30 new birds were a Chiffchaff, 6 Robin, 3 Great Tit, 13 Whitethroat, a Blackcap, 2 Sedge Warbler, a Blue Tit, 2 Lesser Whitethroat and a Woodpigeon; 10 retraps: 3 Sedge Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Wren, a Dunnock, a Blackcap and 2 Chiffchaff; and a control Sedge Warbler with a MUSEUM PARIS ring.

July 8th. Quite soggy start.

 Birds around included a Cuckoo. On Tennyson's Sands were 65 Avocet, 40 Black-tailed Godwit, a Spotted Redshank and 7 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh a Spoonbill (later south). Heading south were 85 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes by Keith Collett yielded 33 new birds: 9 Chiffchaff, 3 Wren, a Swallow, 2 Robin, 2 Great Tit, a Blackcap, 8 Whitethroat, 3 Blue Tit, 3 Dunnock and a House Sparrow; and 16 retraps: 5 Whitethroat, a Great Tit, 3 Dunnock, 5 Chiffchaff, a Lesser Whitethroat and a Blue Tit.

 Great Crested Grebes have bred successfully for the first time here.

 Three Lunar Hornet Moths were attracted by pheromones in East Dunes.

July 7th. Moderately strong south-westerly wind.

 Around was a Buzzard. On Tennyson's Sands were 32 Avocet, 4 Black-tailed Godwit, a Greenshank, a Spotted Redshank and 4 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 3 Greenshank. Flying south were 140 Swift, 23 Lapwing, 85 Curlew and a Swallow.

 A wind-restricted morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 8 new birds: 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Linnet, 2 Whitethroat, a Blackcap and a Lesser Whitethroat; and 5 retraps: 2 Whitethroat, a Chiffchaff, a Chaffinch and a Dunnock. The retrap Chaffinch was ringed here in 2014.

July 6th. Moderately strong mostly southerly wind, with rainy spells.

 On Jackson's Marsh were 5 Spoonbill; on Croftmarsh 4 Avocet; and on Tennyson's Sands 34 Avocet, 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Spotted Redshank. Going south were 35 Swift.

July 5th. Light rainy spells early morning.

 Birds around, including those trapped, were a Cuckoo and a Hobby. On Tennyson's Sands were 34 Avocet, a Black-tailed Godwit and 3 Spoonbill. Heading south were 120 Swift.

 A rain-interrupted morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 12 new birds: 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Great Tit, 4 Whitethroat, a Blue Tit, a Blackcap and a Hobby; and 4 retraps: a Lesser Whitethroat, a Great Tit, a Whitethroat and a Chiffchaff.

July 4th. A Great White Egret flew south early morning. Around, including birds trapped, were a Cuckoo, a Short-eared Owl, a Cetti's Warbler and a Treecreeper. On Tennyson's Sands were 29 Avocet and a Black-tailed Godwit; and on Croftmarsh 2 Avocet and a Spotted Redshank. Flying south were 4 Swift; and north a Grey Heron. 

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes with Rebecca Hardwick resulted in 21 new birds: a Treecreeper, 5 Chiffchaff, 4 Linnet, a Robin, 2 Whitethroat, a Meadow Pipit, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Great Tit, a Dunnock and 4 Starling; and 4 retraps: a Dunnock, 2 Whitethroat and a Great Tit.

July 3rd. Occasional rain in late morning.

 Birds around included a Cuckoo, a Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, a Short-eared Owl and a Cetti's Warbler. On Tennyson's Sands were 12 Spoonbill, a Pink-footed Goose, 42 Avocet, 2 Greenshank, a Spotted Redshank, a Black-tailed Godwit, a Snipe and a Grey Heron; and on Croftmarsh a Great White Egret. Going south were 18 Swift, a Sand Martin, 5 Swallow, 4 Curlew and a Whimbrel.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 33 new birds: 2 Wren, 3 Chiffchaff, 7 Whitethroat, a Blue Tit, a Lesser Whitethroat and 19 Starling; and 4 retraps: 3 Whitethroat and a Dunnock.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 18 new birds: a Chiffchaff, a Robin, 2 White, a Linnet, 2 Great Tit and 11 Starling; and 4 retraps: 2 Whitethroat, a Meadow Pipit and a Blue Tit.

July 1st. Birds around included 2 Cuckoo and 1500 Starling. On Tennyson's Sands were 30 Avocet. Heading south were 2 Spoonbill and a Grey Heron; and north 2 Swift and a Yellow Wagtail.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes by Keith Collett yielded 15 new birds: a Wren, a Chiffchaff, 4 Whitethroat, a Sedge Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, a Blue Tit, 2 Great Tit, 2 Dunnock and a Starling; and 3 retraps: a Lesser Whitethroat, a Wren and a Dunnock.

 A morning ringing session at Aylmer Avenue by Mike Polling yielded 16 new birds: a Chiffchaff, a Wren, 2 Robin, 6 Whitethroat, a Sedge Warbler, a Blackcap, 2 Blue Tit, a Dunnock and a Great Tit; and 11 retraps: a Wren, a Dunnock, 2 Blackbird, 5 Whitethroat, a Great Tit and a Lesser Whitethroat.
