Early September 2021

September 10th. Around were a Sparrowhawk, 200 Sandwich Tern, 3500 Sanderling, 8000 Dunlin, 5500 Bar-tailed Godwit, 2800 Grey Plover, 60000 Knot, 8000 Oystercatcher and 7 Spoonbill. On Tennyson's Sands were 12 Avocet, 253 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Dunlin, 5 Greenshank, a Green Sandpiper and 15 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 7 Dunlin, 4 Snipe, a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank and a Grey Heron. Flying south were 3 Marsh Harrier, 4 Buzzard, a Pomarine Skua, a Great Northern Diver (then north later), 450 Sandwich Tern, 2 Black Tern, 250 Swallow, 350 Sand Martin, 4 Yellow Wagtail and 80 Meadow Pipit.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded a new Lesser Whitethroat; and 3 retraps: a Robin, a Whitethroat and a Lesser Whitethroat.

September 9th. Birds around, including those trapped, were a Sparrowhawk, a Whimbrel, 2 Little Stint, a Common Sandpiper, 40 Swallow, a Pied Flycatcher, 2 Whinchat and a Yellowhammer. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 21 Avocet, 317 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Little Stint, 6 Snipe, 6 Spotted Redshank, 8 Greenshank, a Mediterranean Gull, 27 Spoonbill and a Kingfisher; and on Jackson's Marsh a Garganey. Going south were a Buzzard, a Marsh Harrier, 250 House Martin and 2 Swallow. 

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 6 new birds: a Reed Bunting, 2 Robin, a Reed Warbler, a Yellowhammer and a Dunnock; and 2 retraps: a Lesser Whitethroat and a Dunnock.

September 8th. Around, including birds trapped, were a Sparrowhawk, 7 Swallow, a Garden Warbler, a Pied Flycatcher, 4 Redstart and 2 Whinchat. On Tennyson's Sands were a Garganey, 37 Avocet, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 319 Black-tailed Godwit, 7 Little Stint, a Knot, 4 Spotted Redshank, 4 Redshank, a Green Sandpiper, 4 Greenshank and 32 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 2 Avocet and 8 Dunlin. Heading south were a Sparrowhawk and 4 Great Spotted Woodpecker; and north a Sabine's Gull.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 11 new birds: 2 Wren, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, a Garden Warbler, a Goldfinch, 3 Dunnock and a Sparrowhawk; and 4 retraps: a Robin and 3 Whitethroat.

September 7th. Birds around, including those trapped, were a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank, 40 Swallow, 3000 Starling, 8 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, a Whinchat and 2 Pied Flycatcher. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, a Garganey, 38 Avocet, a Golden Plover, a Ringed Plover, a Little Ringed Plover, 316 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Knot, 6 Sanderling, 59 Dunlin, 2 Curlew Sandpiper, 6 Snipe, 9 Curlew, a Little Stint, a Common Sandpiper, a Green Sandpiper, 14 Redshank, 7 Spotted Redshank, a Mediterranean Gull, a Grey Heron, a Great White Egret, 24 Spoonbill, a Kingfisher and a Cetti's Warbler; on Croftmarsh 2 Buzzard; and on Jackson's Marsh an Avocet, 4 Black-tailed Godwit, 28 Dunlin, 2 Snipe and a Green Sandpiper. Flying south were a Cuckoo, a Sparrowhawk, 14 Rook and 500 House Martin.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 15 new birds: 2 Willow Warbler, 3 Robin, 2 Whitethroat, a Blackcap, 2 Dunnock and 5 Starling; 4 retraps: a Wren, a Dunnock, a Whitethroat and a Blackcap; and a control Sedge Warbler.

September 6th. Around, including birds trapped, were a Sparrowhawk, 2 Peregrine, a Ring-necked Parakeet, 6 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff, 1500 Starling, a Garden Warbler, 4 Whinchat, a Wheatear and a Pied Flycatcher. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 50 Avocet, 250 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Snipe, 3 Greenshank, 16 Spoonbill and a Kingfisher; and on Jackson's Marsh a Ringed Plover, 42 Dunlin and a Little Stint. Going south were 3 Sparrowhawk, 24 Buzzard, 3 Marsh Harrier, 360 Sandwich Tern, 32 Common Tern, a Black Tern, 6 Arctic Skua, 5 Kestrel, 48 Sand Martin, 1090 Swallow, 1686 House Martin, 48 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Grey Wagtail, 27 Tree Sparrow, 182 Meadow Pipit and 3 Tree Pipit; and east a Great White Egret.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 28 new birds: a Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 7 Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Whitethroat, a Blackcap, a Swallow, 4 Great Tit, a Garden Warbler, a Robin and 5 Dunnock; and 4 retraps: 2 Whitethroat, a Pied Flycatcher and a Dunnock.

September 5th. Birds around, including those trapped, were 2 Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, 50 Swallow, a Cetti's Warbler,  23 Willow Warbler, 10 Chiffchaff, 7 Pied Flycatcher, 3 Spotted Flycatcher, a Goldcrest, a Yellow Wagtail and 8 Tree Sparrow. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 53 Avocet, 2 Ringed Plover, 250 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot, a Little Stint, 8 Dunlin, 3 Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, a Greenshank, a Common Tern and 18 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 4 Avocet, 4 Black-tailed Godwit, 14 Dunlin and a Little Stint. Heading south were 85 Wigeon and 72 Swallow.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Kyle Campbell, produced 15 new birds: a Willow Warbler, a Wren, 3 Robin, 2 Whitethroat, a Reed Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Reed Bunting and 4 Dunnock; and 6 retraps: a Wren, 3 Dunnock and 2 Whitethroat.

September 4th. Around, including birds trapped, were a Marsh Harrier, 8 Swallow, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Willow Warbler and 15 Pied Flycatcher. On Tennyson's Sands were 48 Avocet, 154 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Dunlin and 4 Spoonbill.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Toby and Wallace Collett, resulted in 9 new birds: 3 Willow Warbler, a Reed Warbler, a Robin, 2 Whitethroat and 2 Goldfinch; and 2 retraps: a Great Tit and a Whitethroat.

September 3rd. Two Common Rosefinch were trapped in East Dunes. Firstly the one ringed on August 31st was retrapped; then a new, bigger one was trapped and ringed. Birds around, including those trapped, were 150 Common Scoter, 6 Pintail, a Sparrowhawk, 20 Arctic Skua, a Marsh Harrier, a Short-eared Owl, 50 Swallow, 20 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, 9 Redstart, 13 Pied Flycatcher and a Bullfinch. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose,  61 Avocet, 314 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Little Stint, 2 Snipe, a Greenshank, a Grey Heron and 5 Spoonbill; on Fenland Lagoon 21 Little Egret; and on Jackson's Marsh a Black-tailed Godwit, 40 Dunlin, a Little Stint and a Greenshank. Flying south were 3 Black-tailed Godwit, a Snipe, a Little Gull and  a Spoonbill; and north a Red-throated Diver, a Sabine's Gull, 6 Kittiwake, 720 Sandwich Tern, 62 Common Tern, 2 Arctic Tern, a Black Tern, 10 Arctic Skua and 14 Gannet.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Kyle Campbell, provided 5 new birds: a Willow Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, a Whitethroat and a Common Rosefinch; and 6 retraps: a Pied Flycatcher, a Reed Warbler, a Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat and a Common Rosefinch.

September 2nd. Around, including birds trapped, were a Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, a Merlin, a Peregrine, 7 Willow Warbler, 5 Redstart, 3 Wheatear, 10 Pied Flycatcher, a Spotted Flycatcher, 9 Swallow, 100 Meadow Pipit, a Grey Wagtail and a Yellow Wagtail. On Jackson's Marsh were 3 Avocet, a Green Sandpiper, a Redshank and 12 Spoonbill; and on Tennyson's Sands 45 Avocet, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 89 Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Dunlin, 6 Little Stint and 14 Spoonbill.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Keith Collett, produced 7 new birds: 2 Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 2 Whitethroat and 2 Pied Flycatcher; and 6 retraps: a Pied Flycatcher, 4 Whitethroat and a Blackcap.

 A morning ringing session at Aylmer Avenue by Mike Polling produced 21 new birds: 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, a Whitethroat, 3 Blue Tit, a Blackcap, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Sedge Warbler, 3 Dunnock, 3 Great Tit and a Blackbird; and 6 retraps: 2 Blackbird, a Chiffchaff, a Wren, a Dunnock and a Great Tit.

 Moths included a Hummingbird Hawkmoth.

September 1st. Occasional brief morning drizzle.

 Birds around, including those trapped, were 6 Arctic Skua, a Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, a Barn Owl, a Hobby, 2 Swallow, 22 Willow Warbler, 4 Redstart, a Wheatear and 11 Pied Flycatcher. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 54 Avocet, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 320 Black-tailed Godwit, a Bar-tailed Godwit, 29 Dunlin, 3 Little Stint, 6 Snipe, a Spotted Redshank, a Greenshank, a Spoonbill and a Kingfisher; on Jackson's Marsh an Avocet; and on the Mere a Grey Heron. Going north were 22 Common Scoter, 2 Marsh Harrier, a Little Gull, a Black Tern and 8 Arctic Skua; and south an Osprey, a Pomarine Skua and a Golden Plover.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 5 new birds: 2 Willow Warbler, a Whitethroat, a Pied Flycatcher and a Song Thrush; and 5 retraps: 3 Whitethroat and 2 Linnet.
