 On Tennyson's Sands were 613 Teal, 4 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Snipe and a Kingfisher; and on Jackson's Marsh 3 Pintail and 113 Teal. Around, including birds trapped, were 1800 Pink-footed Goose, 28 Shoveler, 16 Gadwall, 11 Pintail, 101 Teal, 70 Lapwing, 900 Golden Plover, a Spotted Redshank, a Greenshank, a Great White Egret (fields west of the River Steeping), 2 Sparrowhawk, 4 Buzzard, 17 Chiffchaff, a Yellow-browed Warbler (along the Cycle Track), a Reed Warbler, 6 Blackcap, 19 Goldcrest, a Treecreeper, 4000 Starling, 9 Song Thrush, 26 Robin, 2 Stonechat, a Yellow Wagtail, 3 Redpoll sp and 18 Siskin. Going south were 420 Pink-footed Goose.

 A wind-shortened morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 8 new birds: 2 Wren, 2 Goldcrest, a Robin, 2 Blackcap and a Sparrowhawk; and 5 retraps: 3 Song Thrush, a Blue Tit and a Great Tit.

September 29th. Drizzle on and off for most of morning, then soggy.

 On the Mere were 17 Pintail, a  Jack Snipe and a Kingfisher; on Tennyson's Sands a 3 Ruff, a Spotted Redshank, a Greenshank and 4000 Starling (to roost); on Jackson's Marsh a Spotted Redshank and 2 Greenshank; and on Croftmarsh a Water Pipit. Birds around, including those trapped, were 1500 Pink-footed Goose, 700 Golden Plover, 6 Turnstone, 2 Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, a Grey Heron, a Sparrowhawk, a Marsh Harrier, a ringtail Hen Harrier, 2 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, a Green Woodpecker, 8 Kestrel, 18 Chiffchaff, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 3 Reed Warbler, 7 Blackcap, 46 Goldcrest, a Treecreeper, a Ring Ouzel, 2 Redwing, 18 Song Thrush, 44 Robin, a Redstart, 23 Stonechat, a Wheatear, 22 Yellow Wagtail, a Bullfinch, a Mealy Redpoll, 80 Redpoll sp, 13 Crossbill and 70 Siskin.  A drizzle-restricted morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 11 new birds: 5 Goldcrest, a Cetti's Warbler, a Reed Bunting, a Dunnock and 3 Song Thrush; and 3 retraps: a Wren, a Goldfinch and a Dunnock.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 31 new birds: 5 Chiffchaff, a Wren, 2 Goldcrest, a Long-tailed Tit, 8 Blackcap, 4 Reed Bunting, a Robin, a Redstart, 5 Dunnock, 2 Song Thrush and a Redwing; and 12 retraps: 5 Robin, a Blackcap, a Goldcrest, a Green Woodpecker, 3 Long-tailed Tit and a Wren.

 On Croftmarsh were 120 Pink-footed Goose. Birds around included 1024 Pink-footed Goose, 5 Pintail, 60 Common Scoter, a Greenshank, 6 Snipe, a Marsh Harrier, 2 Buzzard, a Sparrowhawk, 2 Tawny Owl, a Short-eared owl, 6 Kestrel, a Merlin, 15 Chiffchaff, 2 Yellow-browed Warbler (1 East Dunes and 1 West Dunes), 5 Blackcap, a Lesser Whitethroat, 23 Goldcrest, 2 Treecreeper, 2 Ring Ouzel (1 Plantation and 1 East Dunes), a Fieldfare, 136 Redwing, 24 Song Thrush, a Wheatear, 20 Stonechat, 2 Redstart, 12 Redpoll, 95 Siskin and 3 Brambling. Offshore were a Velvet Scoter, a Goosander and a Grey Phalarope. Heading north over the sea were 45 Common Scoter, 3 Kittiwake, a Black Tern, 8 Commic Tern, 4 Great Skua, 7 Arctic Skua, 2 Pomarine Skua and a Sooty Shearwater; south 12 Whooper Swan and 6 Pintail; and in from the sea came a Whooper Swan and a Kestrel.

September 26th. Strong north-westerly wind.

 A Jack Snipe was on the Mere. Around were a 211 Pink-footed Goose, 4 Goosander, a Jack Snipe, a Purple Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank, a Sparrowhawk, a Marsh Harrier, 2 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, 6 Kestrel, 2 Merlin, 14 Chiffchaff,  a Yellow-browed Warbler (East Dunes), a Whitethroat, 5 Blackcap, 14 Goldcrest, 2 Treecreeper, a Ring Ouzel, 63 Redwing, 11 Stonechat, a Wheatear, a Mealy Redpoll (then south), 28 Lesser Redpoll, a Brambling, 90 Siskin and 2 Lapland Bunting. Heading west were 30 Pink-footed Goose; north 2 Sooty Shearwater and a Buzzard; and south 3 Whooper Swan, a Hen Harrier and 5 Redwing.

September 25th. Strong to gale force north-westerly wind; rain for most of the day.

 Stellar movement over the sea - full totals to be subsequently added. Highlights over the sea included a Sabine's Gull, 223 Great Skua, 11 Pomarine Skua, 194 Arctic Skua, 3 Long-tailed Skua and a small Harrier sp. In from the sea came a Short-eared Owl. Birds around included 10 Little Egret. Flying south were 15 Swallow and 3 House Martin.

September 24th. Increasing south-westerly wind.

 Highlights south over the sea were 31 Great Skua, a Pomarine Skua, 5 Arctic Skua and a Great White Egret; and north 3 Kittiwake. The first Water Pipit of the autumn flew over Sykes Farm in the afternoon and a Great White Egret was out from Wash Viewpoint in the evening. Highlights moving south over land were 4 Crossbill, 909 Siskin and a Lapland Bunting. On Tennyson's Sands was a Water Rail; and on Jackson's Marsh a Water Rail.  A brief mid morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 14 new birds: 3 Goldcrest, 2 Robin, a Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Blackcap, 2 Blue Tit, a Dunnock and 2 Song Thrush; and 6 retraps: a Redstart, a Robin, a Linnet, 2 Goldcrest and a Blue Tit.

September 17th. There was a notable arrival of migrants during the morning, largely on the east side of the reserve, with many quickly filtering south through the dune. In from the sea came 2 Buzzard and 2 Kestrel; and heading south-east were 212 Pink-footed Goose. On Jackson's Marsh in the evening were 24 Shoveler, 29 Avocet, 14 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot and 19 Spoonbill

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 7 new birds: 4 Chiffchaff, a Willow Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat and a Redstart; and 4 retraps: a Wren, a Blue Tit and 2 Whitethroat.

On the estuary were 16 Spoonbill. On Fenland Lagoon were 2 Spotted Redshank.  A wind-shortened morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 8 new birds: 2 Wren, a Chiffchaff, a Robin, a Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Blackcap and a Great Tit; and 5 retraps: 2 Blackcap, a Wren and 2 Dunnock.

September 15th. Misty, damp start, then sunny.

 On Jackson's Marsh were 28 Avocet, 22 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Snipe, a Knot and a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper; and on Fenland Lagoon a Spotted Redshank. Around, including birds trapped, were a Barnacle Goose, 5 Eider, a juvenile Cuckoo, 2 Whimbrel, 2 Green Sandpiper, 3 Greenshank, 17 Spoonbill, 16 Little Egret, a Marsh Harrier, 2 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, a Short-eared Owl (Old Saltmarsh in the evening), a Kingfisher, 6 Kestrel, 17 Chiffchaff, a Reed Warbler, a Garden Warbler, 8 Blackcap, 5 Goldcrest, 3 Treecreeper, 1100 Starling, 5 Pied Flycatcher (2 East Dunes and 3 Shovelers Pool), 2 Whinchat, a Wheatear, 12 Yellow Wagtail, a Tree Pipit (West Dunes), a Crossbill (Plantation), a Corn Bunting and a Lapland Bunting (from the Wash Viewpoint in the evening). A Buzzard arrived from the sea whilst a Red Kite flew north; and south-east went 65 Pink-footed Goose.

A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 14 new birds: a Chiffchaff, 3 Robin, a Reed Warbler, 4 Blackcap, a Garden Warbler, a Reed Bunting, 2 Great Tit and a Dunnock; and 6 retraps: a Robin, a Blackcap, a Reed Bunting, a Dunnock, a Wren and a Great Tit.

 September 14th. 8 Egyptian Goose arrived from the north in the morning. On Jackson's Marsh were 2 Black-tailed Godwit; on Tennyson's Sands 45 Black-tailed Godwit and a Snipe; and on Croftmarsh 59 Pink-footed Goose. Birds around, including those trapped, were a Wheatear, 2 Goldcrest, 2 Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 9 Blackcap, 2 Lesser Whitethroat and a Reed Warbler. Flying south were 8 Arctic Skua, an adult Pomarine Skua, a Manx Shearwater and a Spoonbill. In the late afternoon 24 Spoonbill were out from Wash Viewpoint.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 37 new birds: 2 Willow Warbler, 2 Goldcrest, a Chiffchaff, 2 Robin, 7 Blackcap, 2 Linnet, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 5 Reed Bunting, a Reed Warbler, 3 Great Tit, a Goldfinch and 9 Dunnock; and 7 retraps: 2 Blackcap, a Goldfinch, a Great Tit, a Robin, a Dunnock and a Wren.

September 13th. A Pectoral Sandpiper was flushed from Jackson's Marsh by a Buzzard late afternoon and flew south with Black-tailed Godwit. Also there, were 44 Avocet, a Snipe and a juvenile Curlew Sandpiper; on Tennyson's Sands a Spoonbill; and on Croftmarsh 68 Pink-footed Goose. Heading south were a Curlew Sandpiper, 20 Arctic Skua, a Black-throated Diver, 2 Marsh Harrier, a Buzzard, a Kestrel, 13 Swallow, 38 House Martin, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 4 Alba Wagtail, 320 Meadow Pipit, a Redpoll, 5 Crossbill and 37 Siskin. Around, including birds trapped, were 2 Whimbrel, 64 Black-tailed Godwit, 50000 Knot, 4 Snipe, a Common Sandpiper, a Spotted Redshank, 3 Greenshank, 350 Sandwich Tern, 3 Arctic Skua, a Grey Heron, 12 Little Egret, a Sparrowhawk, 2 Marsh Harrier, 5 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, a Short-eared Owl, 2 Green Woodpecker, 8 Kestrel, a Merlin, 3 Willow Warbler, 13 Chiffchaff, a Reed Warbler, 5 Blackcap, a Whitethroat, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 7 Goldcrest, a Treecreeper, 4000 Starling, 2 Stonechat, 4 Yellow Wagtail, 210 Meadow Pipit, a Crossbill, 2 Siskin and a Lapland Bunting (frequenting fields west of the river). 

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes resulted in 8 new birds: a Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap, a Linnet, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Robin and 2 Siskin; and 3 retraps: a Robin, a Great Tit and a Dunnock.

 A morning ringing session at Aylmer Avenue by James Siddle resulted in 12 new birds: 3 Goldcrest, a Whitethroat, a Goldfinch, a Reed Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Great Tit and 3 Blue Tit; and 6 retraps: a Chiffchaff, 3 Great Tit, a Long-tailed Tit and a Robin.

 A Painted Lady was in East Dunes.

Birds around, including those trapped, were a Whimbrel, 2 Greenshank, a Grey Heron, 2 Sparrowhawk, a Marsh Harrier, 4 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, a Green Woodpecker, 7 Kestrel, 12 Chiffchaff, 7 Willow Warbler, 2 Sedge Warbler, a Reed Warbler, 11 Blackcap, 4 Lesser Whitethroat, a Whitethroat, 12 Goldcrest, a Treecreeper, 900 Starling, 3 Stonechat, 2 House Sparrow, 3 Yellow Wagtail, a Grey Wagtail, a Redpoll and 8 Siskin.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 12 new birds: a Chiffchaff, a Willow Warbler, 2 Goldcrest, a Blackcap, 3 Robin, a Whitethroat, a Stonechat, a Meadow Pipit and a Reed Bunting; and 4 retraps: a Wren, a Blackbird, a Robin and a Dunnock.

On Wainfleet Marsh were 3000 Starling.

September 10th. On Jackson's Marsh were 2 Curlew Sandpiper and a Ruff; on Tennyson's Sands a Water Rail, 91 Lapwing, 120 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Snipe and 2 Greenshank; and on Croftmarsh a Pink-footed Goose and a Green Sandpiper. Birds around, including those trapped, were 35 Shoveler, 5 Stock Dove, a Whimbrel, a Grey Heron, 2 Sparrowhawk, 2 Marsh Harrier, 4 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, a Short-eared Owl, a Green Woodpecker, 8 Kestrel, a Peregrine, 40 House Martin, a Sedge Warbler, 19 Chiffchaff, 7 Willow Warbler, 6 Blackcap, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Whitethroat, 4 Goldcrest, 3 Treecreeper, 6000 Starling, a Spotted Flycatcher, a House Sparrow and 2 Yellow Wagtail.  A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 14 new birds: 5 Chiffchaff, a Willow Warbler, 2 Robin, a Sedge Warbler, a Whitethroat, 2 Reed Bunting and 2 Dunnock; and 5 retraps: a Wren, a Dunnock, a Robin and 2 Long-tailed Tit.

Around, including birds trapped, were 31 Shoveler, 2 Whimbrel, a Green Sandpiper, 300 Sandwich Tern, a Sparrowhawk, a Marsh Harrier, 4 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, 2 Short-eared Owl, 10 Kestrel, a Merlin, a Peregrine, 18 Chiffchaff, 43 Willow Warbler, 4 Reed Warbler, 12 Blackcap, a Garden Warbler, 11 Lesser Whitethroat, 15 Whitethroat, 8 Goldcrest, a Treecreeper, a Redwing, 11 Spotted Flycatcher, 5 Redstart, 4 Whinchat, 2 Stonechat, a Wheatear and a Yellowhammer. 

 A morning ringing session  in East Dunes provided 21 new birds: 2 Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 2 Willow Warbler, a Wren, 2 Robin, 4 Blackcap, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Whitethroat, a Chaffinch, a Redstart, 2 Reed Bunting, a Tree Sparrow and 2 Dunnock; and 5 retraps: a Robin, 2 Great Tit, a Goldfinch and a Whitethroat.

Migrant insects included 2 Willow Emerald Damselfly and a male Red-veined Darter. There was a notable arrival from the sea and a southerly movement of White Butterfly spp (largely Small White) over the saltmarsh.

 On Jackson's Marsh were a Water Rail and a Spoonbill; on Tennyson's Sands a Pintail, 2 Curlew Sandpiper and 4 Spoonbill; and on Croftmarsh 3 Barnacle Goose, 11 Pink-footed Goose, 13 Stock Dove and a Snipe. Around, including birds trapped, were 3 Swift, 3 Whimbrel, a Spotted Redshank, 2 Greenshank, a Grey Heron, 2 Sparrowhawk, 6 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, 10 Kestrel, 18 Willow Warbler, 10 Chiffchaff,  2 Reed Warbler, 8 Blackcap, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, 7 Whitethroat, 4 Goldcrest, 2 Treecreeper, 2600 Starling, 2 Yellow Wagtail, a Tree Pipit, 3 Redpoll and 22 Siskin. Going south were 5 Sand Martin and 5 Swallow.

 A rain-shortened morning ringing session in East Dunes resulted in 22 new birds: a Goldcrest, a Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 3 Robin, a Reed Warbler, 3 Linnet, a Whitethroat and 7 Goldfinch; and 2 retrap Whitethroat.

September 6th.

September 5th. A Wryneck was discovered on the seaward side of East Dunes. Offshore was a Long-tailed Skua. On Tennyson's Sands were 18 Spoonbill, 70 Black-tailed Godwit, a Spotted Redshank and a Greenshank; and on Croftmarsh a Kingfisher. Around, including birds trapped, were a Buzzard, 2 Marsh Harrier, 2 Sparrowhawk, 6 Whimbrel, a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank, 12 Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 4 Whitethroat, 7 Blackcap, a Goldcrest, 2 Wheatear and a Redstart and 2 Yellow Wagtail. Going south were 2 Buzzard.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 31 new birds: 6 Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 4 Robin, 3 Whitethroat, 7 Blackcap, a Linnet, 2 Sedge Warbler, a Reed Bunting, 3 Greenfinch, a Dunnock and a Woodpigeon; and 3 retraps: a Whitethroat, a Blue Tit and a Linnet.

September 4th. On Tennyson's Sands were 19 Spoonbill, 140 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Greenshank. Birds around, including those trapped, were 115 Shelduck, 3 Swift, 4 Whimbrel, 2 Tawny Owl, a Short-eared Owl, a Peregrine, a Green Woodpecker, a Raven, 5 Blackcap, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 4 Whitethroat, 5 Willow Warbler, 7 Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 4 Spotted Flycatcher, a Treecreeper, 43 Wheatear, 2 Yellow Wagtail and 2 Tree Pipit. Heading south were 2 Pomarine Skua, a Black Tern, 5 Sand Martin, 6 Swallow, 10 Grey Wagtail, 8 Tree Pipit and a Lapland Bunting.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 24 new birds: 2 Wren, 2 Willow Warbler, 5 Robin, 2 Blackcap, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Tree Pipit, 2 Linnet, 2 Chaffinch, 3 Goldfinch, a Whitethroat and a Dunnock; and 3 retraps: a Blackcap, a Whitethroat and a Linnet.

September 3rd. Moderately strong south-westerly wind gradually decreasing; rainy spells very early and very late morning.

 On Tennyson's Sands were 9 Spoonbill, 70 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Common Sandpiper. Around, including birds trapped, were a Green Woodpecker, 2 Blackcap, a Whitethroat, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Chiffchaff and a Redstart. Flying south were 22 Arctic Skua, 2 juvenile Long-tailed Skua, 2 Black Tern, 190 Teal, 90 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, and 2 Shoveler; and south-west 3 Buzzard, 2 Swift and 3 Swallow.

 A weather-delayed morning ringing session at Aylmer Avenue provided 12 new birds: 2 Wren, 2 Robin, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Blackcap, a Whitethroat, a Great Tit and 4 Goldfinch; and 8 retraps: a Blackcap, 4 Great Tit, 2 Dunnock and a Chiffchaff.

September 2nd. On Jackson's Marsh were 120 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Common Sandpiper and 10 Spoonbill. Birds around, including those trapped, were 5 Whimbrel, a Spotted Redshank, 3 Greenshank, a Buzzard, 7 Kestrel, 6 Willow Warbler, 11 Chiffchaff, 2 Reed Warbler, a Sedge Warbler, 7 Blackcap, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 5 Whitethroat, a Treecreeper, 2 Goldcrest, 450 Starling, 7 Redstart, a Spotted Flycatcher, a Whinchat, 3 Yellow Wagtail and 3 Siskin.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 10 new birds: a Goldcrest, 2 Chiffchaff, 2 Robin, 2 Blackcap, a Sedge Warbler, a Spotted Flycatcher and a Great Tit; and 4 retraps: a Woodpigeon, a Whitethroat, a Dunnock and a Robin.

September 1st. On Jackson's Marsh were a Little Ringed Plover, 135 Black-tailed Godwit, 23 Common Sandpiper, 5 Spotted Redshank and 8 Spoonbill; on Tennyson's Sands a Ruff; and on Fenland Lagoon a Curlew Sandpiper and a Great White Egret. Around, including birds trapped, were 188 Teal, 5 Whimbrel, 3 Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, 3 Greenshank, a Grey Heron, a Sparrowhawk, a Marsh Harrier, 3 Buzzard, 2 Tawny Owl, a Short-eared Owl, 8 Willow Warbler, 13 Chiffchaff,, 5 Cetti's Warbler, 4 Reed Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 4 Lesser Whitethroat, 5 Whitethroat, 2 Goldcrest, a Treecreeper, 4000 Starling, a Pied Flycatcher, 8 Redstart, 3 Yellow Wagtail and a Grey Wagtail. Heading south were 24 Swallow and 4 Buzzard.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 13 new birds: a Goldcrest, a Wren, 2 Blackcap, 3 Robin, 3 Goldfinch, a Whitethroat, a Lesser Whitethroat and a Great Spotted Woodpecker; and 4 retraps: 2 Dunnock, a Whitethroat and a Cetti's Warbler.
