 On Tennyson's Sands were 44 Avocet, 232 Black-tailed Godwit, a Grey Heron and 5 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 12 Black-tailed Godwit.

September 29th. Soggy start. Increasing westerly wind.

 Around, including birds trapped, were a Sparrowhawk, 3 Snipe, 2 Greenshank, 42 Sandwich Tern, a Jay, a Goldcrest, 9 Chiffchaff, a Blackcap, a Whitethroat and a Lesser Whitethroat. On Tennyson's Sands were a Marsh Harrier, a Water Rail, 25 Avocet, 312 Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Greenshank, 5 Spotted Redshank and 17 Spoonbill; on Croftmarsh 300 Pink-footed Goose; on the Mere a Marsh Harrier, a Grey Heron, 8 Snipe, a Kingfisher and a Cetti's Warbler; and on Jackson's Marsh a Black-tailed Godwit. Heading south were 5 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, a Grey Heron, 30 Gannet, a Yellow-legged Gull, 145 Sandwich Tern, 3 Great Skua, 5 Arctic Skua, 3 Arctic Tern, a Swift, 3 Sand Martin, 12 Swallow, 59 House Martin, 40 Meadow Pipit, a Grey Wagtail and 8 Siskin; and north a Marsh Harrier.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 9 new birds: 2 Wren, a Chiffchaff, a Reed Bunting, a Goldfinch, a Meadow Pipit, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Dunnock and a Song Thrush; and 4 retraps: a Chiffchaff, a Wren, a Dunnock and a Whitethroat.

September 28th. Increasing southerly wind.

 Birds around, including those trapped, were 54 Sandwich Tern, a Marsh Harrier, a Kingfisher, a Peregrine, 25 House Martin, 2 Stonechat, 2 Chiffchaff, a Garden Warbler and a Whitethroat. On Tennyson's Sands were 322 Pink-footed Goose, a Barnacle Goose, a Marsh Harrier, 19 Avocet, 277 Black-tailed Godwit, a Snipe, a Knot, 6 Greenshank, 6 Spotted Redshank, 21 Spoonbill, a Merlin and a Cetti's Warbler; and on Jackson's Marsh 5 Whooper Swan, 2 Ringed Plover, a Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Dunlin and a Greenshank. Flying south-west were 42 Pink-footed Goose; east 70 Pink-footed Goose; and south 2 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, a Razorbill, a Rook, 90 Swallow, 150 Meadow Pipit, a Lesser Redpoll, 16 Siskin and 4 Brambling. In off the sea came a Buzzard.

 A wind-shortened morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 7 new birds: a Wren, 2 Chiffchaff, 3 Goldfinch and a Garden Warbler; and 3 retraps: a Whitethroat, a Dunnock and a Blue Tit.

September 27th. Strong southerly then south-westerly wind, with rainy spells.

 Birds around included 2 Sand Martin, 300 Swallow, a Chiffchaff and 3 Goldcrest. On Tennyson's Sands were 13 Avocet,  272 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot, a Snipe, a Spotted Redshank, 2 Greenshank and 17 Spoonbill; on Jackson's Marsh an Avocet and 4 Dunlin; and on Croftmarsh 350 Pink-footed Goose and 3 Buzzard. Going south were 46 Sandwich Tern, 2 Common Tern, 12 Arctic Tern, an Arctic Skua, 16 House Martin and 7 Swallow; and north a Dark-bellied Brent Goose.

September 26th. Around, including birds trapped, were 176 Pink-footed Goose, a Buzzard, a Sparrowhawk, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 5 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap, a Garden Warbler and a Treecreeper. On Tennyson's Sands were 16 Avocet, 300 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot, a Dunlin, 6 Greenshank, a Redshank, 4 Spotted Redshank, 19 Spoonbill and a Kingfisher; and on Jackson's Marsh 2 Black-tailed Godwit. Heading south were 3 Snipe, a Grey Heron and 15 Swallow.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes resulted in 6 new birds: a Chiffchaff, a Blackcap, a Cetti's Warbler, a Reed Bunting, a Robin and a Blue Tit; and 5 retraps: a Garden Warbler, a Blackcap and 3 Great Tit. The retrap Garden Warbler was ringed on September 20th, and increased in weight from 15.5g to 22.7g.

September 25th. Birds around, including those trapped, were a Sparrowhawk, a Wheatear, a Chiffchaff and 2 Blackcap. On Tennyson's Sands were 12 Avocet, a Ringed Plover, 180 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot, 4 Greenshank, 3 Spotted Redshank and 20 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 107 Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank. Flying north were 8 Pink-footed Goose; east 72 Pink-footed Goose and south-east 185 Pink-footed Goose.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Kyle Campbell, provided 13 new birds: a Wren, a Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap, a Linnet, a Robin, 2 Reed Bunting, 2 Goldfinch and 3 Dunnock; and 4 retraps: a Robin and 3 Dunnock.

September 24th. Increasing south-westerly wind.

 Around, including birds trapped, were 45 Pink-footed Goose (New Saltmarsh then south just after dawn), a Sparrowhawk, a Marsh Harrier, a Greenshank, 3 Sandwich Tern, a Merlin, a Cetti's Warbler, a Wheatear, 2 Chiffchaff, a Lesser Whitethroat and a Blackcap. On Tennyson's Sands were 110 Pink-footed Goose, a Water Rail, 17 Avocet, 264 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot, 4 Snipe, 5 Spotted Redshank, 7 Greenshank, a Redshank, a Grey Heron and 22 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh an Avocet, 8 Black-tailed Godwit and a Dunlin. Going south were 18 Golden Plover, 11 Rook, a House Martin, 68 Swallow and 5 Siskin.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Kyle Campbell, produced 4 new birds: a Linnet, a Blackcap and 2 Reed Bunting.

September 23rd. Increasing south-westerly wind.

 A Glossy Ibis arrived on Tennyson's Sands in the afternoon. Birds around, including those trapped, were a Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, a Greenshank, 3 Swallow and 5 Chiffchaff. On Tennyson's Sands were a Barnacle Goose, 5 Pink-footed Goose, a Water Rail, 25 Avocet, 284 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot, 2 Dunlin, a Snipe, 5 Spotted Redshank, a Green Sandpiper, 4 Greenshank, 30 Spoonbill and 2 Yellow Wagtail; and on Jackson's Marsh a Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Greenshank. Heading south were 15 House Martin; east 170 Pink-footed Goose; and north 50 Pink-footed Goose.

 A wind-shortened morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Keith Collett, yielded 5 new birds: a Chiffchaff, 3 Blackcap and a Song Thrush; and a retrap Robin.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 10 new birds: a Chiffchaff, a Wren, 4 Blackcap, a Whitethroat, a Reed Bunting, a Dunnock and a Sparrowhawk; and 3 retraps: a Robin, a Goldcrest and a Whitethroat.

September 21st. Birds around, including those trapped, were 35 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, 2 Sparrowhawk, 2 Buzzard, 50000 Knot, 4 Greenshank, 36 Sandwich Tern, a Short-eared Owl, a Peregrine, 5 Chiffchaff, a Garden Warbler, a Goldcrest and a Stonechat. On Tennyson's Sands were 23 Avocet, 267 Black-tailed Godwit and 25 Spoonbill; and on the Mere a Kingfisher. Going south were 36 Swallow, 2 Yellow Wagtail, a Grey Wagtail, 75 Meadow Pipit, 4 Siskin and 2 Brambling; and north a Marsh Harrier.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 14 new birds: a Goldcrest, 7 Blackcap, a Robin, a Whitethroat, a Linnet, 2 Reed Warbler, a Garden Warbler, a Reed Bunting, 2 Song Thrush and a Blackbird; and 5 retraps: a Blackcap, a Robin, 2 Dunnock and a Great Tit.

Mid September 2021

September 20th. Around, including birds trapped, were 25 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, 3 Snipe, a Spotted Redshank, a Greenshank, 45 Sandwich Tern, 14 Common Tern, 5 Arctic Skua, 2 Peregrine, 2 Swallow, a Chiffchaff, a Garden Warbler, a Wheatear, a Stonechat and a Redstart. On Tennyson's Sands were 31 Avocet, 201 Black-tailed Godwit and 22 Spoonbill; on the Mere 2 Water Rail and a Kingfisher; and on Jackson's Marsh 4 Avocet and 13 Black-tailed Godwit. Going south were 8 Eider and 3 Red-breasted Merganser.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes resulted in 7 new birds: a Redstart, a Garden Warbler, a Robin, a Blackcap, a Meadow Pipit, a Whitethroat and a Song Thrush; and a retrap Robin.

September 19th. Birds around included a Great Skua, an Arctic Skua and a Merlin. On Tennyson's Sands were 28 Avocet, 230 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Redshank and 23 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 2 Black-tailed Godwit and a Green Sandpiper. Heading south were 8 Swallow.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 3 new birds: a Wren, a Blackcap and a Lesser Whitethroat; and a retrap Song Thrush.

September 18th. Around, including birds trapped, were a Marsh Harrier, a Buzzard, a Merlin and a Siskin. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 31 Avocet, 275 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Ruff, a Greenshank, a Green Sandpiper and 15 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh a Snipe. Flying south-west were 14 Siskin.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Kyle Campbell, produced 13 new birds: a Willow Warbler, 5 Blackcap, 5 Chaffinch, a Siskin and a Dunnock; and 2 retraps: a Whitethroat and a Dunnock.

September 17th. Birds around, including those trapped, were a Chiffchaff, a Pied Flycatcher, a Redstart, a Whinchat and a Treecreeper. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 29 Avocet, 279 Black-tailed Godwit and 4 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 3 Avocet. Going south were a Spoonbill and numbers of Meadow Pipit, Wigeon, Teal, Pintail and Shoveler..

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 9 new birds: a Wren, 3 Robin, a Whitethroat, 2 Blackcap, a Reed Warbler and a Dunnock; and 3 retraps: a Blackcap. a Dunnock and a Robin.

 A morning ringing session at Aylmer Avenue, by Mike Polling, yielded 3 new birds: a Chiffchaff, a Blackbird and a Dunnock; and 4 retraps: 3 Wren and a Treecreeper.

September 16th. Around were a Sparrowhawk, a Marsh Harrier, Short-eared Owl, a Wheatear and 2 Jay. On Tennyson's Sands were 16 Avocet, 262 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot and 10 Spoonbill. Going south-west were 9 Rook.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Keith Collett and Kyle Campbell, provided 10 new birds: 2 Robin, a Whitethroat, a Reed Warbler, 2 Great Tit, a Blackcap, a Reed Bunting and 2 Dunnock; and 2 retraps: a Lesser Whitethroat and a Robin.

 In the evening six species of bats were identified by Andrew Chick, including Noctule, Daubenton's And Nathasius's Pipistrelle.

September 15th. Birds around included a Short-eared Owl, 2 Peregrine, a Redstart, a Pied Flycatcher and a Wheatear. There was an influx of 60 Robin and 60 Reed Bunting. On Tennyson's Sands were 23 Avocet, 239 Black-tailed Godwit and 9 Spoonbill. Heading south were a Tree Pipit, 5 Tree Sparrow and a Lapland Bunting.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 6 new birds: 3 Whitethroat, 2 Meadow Pipit and a Robin; and 5 retraps: 3 Whitethroat and 2 Dunnock.

September 14th. Rain from late morning.

 Around were a Marsh Harrier and a Buzzard. On Tennyson's Sands were 29 Avocet, 277 Black-tailed Godwit, a Spotted Redshank, a Greenshank, a Green Sandpiper and 15 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 7 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Little Stint.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced just a retrap Whitethroat.

September 13th. Birds around, including those trapped, were a Sparrowhawk, a Long-tailed Skua, 3 Red-throated Diver, 3 Arctic Skua and a Garden Warbler. On Tennyson's Sands were 23 Avocet, 267 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Greenshank, a Green Sandpiper and 17 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh a Garganey, 3 Avocet, a Greenshank and a Redshank. Flying south were 2 Great Northern Diver, a Black-throated Diver, 25 Red-throated Diver, 4 Great Skua, a Pomarine Skua and 2 Fulmar; and  north 8 Arctic Skua, 2 Arctic Tern, 15 Common Tern, 300 Sandwich Tern and a Black Tern.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes resulted in 8 new birds: 2 Blackcap, 2 Whitethroat, a Goldfinch, a Song Thrush and 2 Woodpigeon; and 5 retraps: 2 Robin, a Great Tit, a Dunnock and a Garden Warbler.

September 12th. Around, including birds trapped, were 2 Little Tern, 2 Peregrine and a Garden Warbler. An Asio sp was over East Dunes around dawn. On Tennyson's Sands were 17 Avocet, 270 Black-tailed Godwit, a Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, a Greenshank and 6 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 4 Black-tailed Godwit, 37 Dunlin, a Snipe and a Great White Egret. Going south were a Buzzard, 3 Swallow, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 300 Meadow Pipit and 34 Tree Sparrow.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 12 new birds: 3 Robin, 2 Blackcap, 3 Goldfinch, a Reed Bunting, a Whitethroat, a Sedge Warbler and a Garden Warbler; and 5 retraps: a Whitethroat, 3 Dunnock and a Reed Warbler.

September 11th. The Common Rosefinch trapped and ringed on September 3rd was retrapped early this morning. It increased in weight from 21.1g to 25.6g. Birds around included 80000 Knot, a Great Northern Diver, a Great White Egret, a Peregrine and a Whinchat. On Tennyson's Sands were 9 Avocet, 275 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Little Stint, a Knot, a Green Sandpiper, a Spotted Redshank, 3 Snipe and 17 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh a Black-tailed Godwit and 35 Dunlin. Heading south were 6 Buzzard, a Black-throated Diver, 1500 Meadow Pipit,1500 Swallow and 1400 House Martin.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes produced 3 new birds: a Lesser Whitethroat, a Whitethroat and a Reed Bunting; and 2 retraps: a Common Rosefinch and a Dunnock.

Early September 2021

September 10th. Around were a Sparrowhawk, 200 Sandwich Tern, 3500 Sanderling, 8000 Dunlin, 5500 Bar-tailed Godwit, 2800 Grey Plover, 60000 Knot, 8000 Oystercatcher and 7 Spoonbill. On Tennyson's Sands were 12 Avocet, 253 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Dunlin, 5 Greenshank, a Green Sandpiper and 15 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 7 Dunlin, 4 Snipe, a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank and a Grey Heron. Flying south were 3 Marsh Harrier, 4 Buzzard, a Pomarine Skua, a Great Northern Diver (then north later), 450 Sandwich Tern, 2 Black Tern, 250 Swallow, 350 Sand Martin, 4 Yellow Wagtail and 80 Meadow Pipit.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded a new Lesser Whitethroat; and 3 retraps: a Robin, a Whitethroat and a Lesser Whitethroat.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes provided 28 new birds: a Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 7 Lesser Whitethroat, 6 Whitethroat, a Blackcap, a Swallow, 4 Great Tit, a Garden Warbler, a Robin and 5 Dunnock; and 4 retraps: 2 Whitethroat, a Pied Flycatcher and a Dunnock.

September 5th. Birds around, including those trapped, were 2 Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, 50 Swallow, a Cetti's Warbler,  23 Willow Warbler, 10 Chiffchaff, 7 Pied Flycatcher, 3 Spotted Flycatcher, a Goldcrest, a Yellow Wagtail and 8 Tree Sparrow. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 53 Avocet, 2 Ringed Plover, 250 Black-tailed Godwit, a Knot, a Little Stint, 8 Dunlin, 3 Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, a Greenshank, a Common Tern and 18 Spoonbill; and on Jackson's Marsh 4 Avocet, 4 Black-tailed Godwit, 14 Dunlin and a Little Stint. Heading south were 85 Wigeon and 72 Swallow.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Kyle Campbell, produced 15 new birds: a Willow Warbler, a Wren, 3 Robin, 2 Whitethroat, a Reed Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Reed Bunting and 4 Dunnock; and 6 retraps: a Wren, 3 Dunnock and 2 Whitethroat.

September 4th. Around, including birds trapped, were a Marsh Harrier, 8 Swallow, 2 Yellow Wagtail, 3 Willow Warbler and 15 Pied Flycatcher. On Tennyson's Sands were 48 Avocet, 154 Black-tailed Godwit, 4 Dunlin and 4 Spoonbill.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Toby and Wallace Collett, resulted in 9 new birds: 3 Willow Warbler, a Reed Warbler, a Robin, 2 Whitethroat and 2 Goldfinch; and 2 retraps: a Great Tit and a Whitethroat.

September 3rd. Two Common Rosefinch were trapped in East Dunes. Firstly the one ringed on August 31st was retrapped; then a new, bigger one was trapped and ringed. Birds around, including those trapped, were 150 Common Scoter, 6 Pintail, a Sparrowhawk, 20 Arctic Skua, a Marsh Harrier, a Short-eared Owl, 50 Swallow, 20 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, 9 Redstart, 13 Pied Flycatcher and a Bullfinch. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose,  61 Avocet, 314 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Little Stint, 2 Snipe, a Greenshank, a Grey Heron and 5 Spoonbill; on Fenland Lagoon 21 Little Egret; and on Jackson's Marsh a Black-tailed Godwit, 40 Dunlin, a Little Stint and a Greenshank. Flying south were 3 Black-tailed Godwit, a Snipe, a Little Gull and  a Spoonbill; and north a Red-throated Diver, a Sabine's Gull, 6 Kittiwake, 720 Sandwich Tern, 62 Common Tern, 2 Arctic Tern, a Black Tern, 10 Arctic Skua and 14 Gannet.

September 2nd. Around, including birds trapped, were a Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, a Merlin, a Peregrine, 7 Willow Warbler, 5 Redstart, 3 Wheatear, 10 Pied Flycatcher, a Spotted Flycatcher, 9 Swallow, 100 Meadow Pipit, a Grey Wagtail and a Yellow Wagtail. On Jackson's Marsh were 3 Avocet, a Green Sandpiper, a Redshank and 12 Spoonbill; and on Tennyson's Sands 45 Avocet, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 89 Black-tailed Godwit, 6 Dunlin, 6 Little Stint and 14 Spoonbill.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes, with Keith Collett, produced 7 new birds: 2 Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 2 Whitethroat and 2 Pied Flycatcher; and 6 retraps: a Pied Flycatcher, 4 Whitethroat and a Blackcap.

 A morning ringing session at Aylmer Avenue by Mike Polling produced 21 new birds: 5 Willow Warbler, 2 Chiffchaff, a Whitethroat, 3 Blue Tit, a Blackcap, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Sedge Warbler, 3 Dunnock, 3 Great Tit and a Blackbird; and 6 retraps: 2 Blackbird, a Chiffchaff, a Wren, a Dunnock and a Great Tit.

 Moths included a Hummingbird Hawkmoth.

September 1st. Occasional brief morning drizzle.

 Birds around, including those trapped, were 6 Arctic Skua, a Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard, a Barn Owl, a Hobby, 2 Swallow, 22 Willow Warbler, 4 Redstart, a Wheatear and 11 Pied Flycatcher. On Tennyson's Sands were a Pink-footed Goose, 54 Avocet, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 320 Black-tailed Godwit, a Bar-tailed Godwit, 29 Dunlin, 3 Little Stint, 6 Snipe, a Spotted Redshank, a Greenshank, a Spoonbill and a Kingfisher; on Jackson's Marsh an Avocet; and on the Mere a Grey Heron. Going north were 22 Common Scoter, 2 Marsh Harrier, a Little Gull, a Black Tern and 8 Arctic Skua; and south an Osprey, a Pomarine Skua and a Golden Plover.

 A morning ringing session in East Dunes yielded 5 new birds: 2 Willow Warbler, a Whitethroat, a Pied Flycatcher and a Song Thrush; and 5 retraps: 3 Whitethroat and 2 Linnet.
